Pet’s Paradise: Landscaping Ideas for You and Your Pets

They say that a dog is a man’s best friend, but how far are you willing to go to make sure your dog knows it? If you are starting your next landscaping project, why not make sure your furry friend can enjoy it as much as you? Here’s how.

Make Water a Focal Point

A water feature in any landscaping plan is a good idea, but even more so when you have pets. Water-loving dogs will jump at the chance to be able to drink, play, and frolic in a pool that you’ve set up with their interests in mind. All you need to do is make sure the water is clean and safe to drink. The pond should also have a natural slope for a dog to both enter and exit the water safely.

Strategic Fencing

When you don’t have pets, fencing is neither here nor there. But as soon as you welcome a dog into your property, you realise its importance. Fencing both keeps them on your property and out of harm’s way. You can fence off your entire section or create a dog-friendly area out the back and away from prying eyes. Spend time on your landscaping plans to ensure fencing matches your overall goal.

Dog-Friendly Plants

Plants are the heart of any landscaping plan, but they can also be toxic for cats, dogs, and other pets. When you begin sketching up your design, research which plants you shouldn’t have. You would be amazed at how many can cause stomach upset and other problems when ingested.

If you’re not sure whether specific plants are safe or not, talk to your local garden store expert or vet for advice.

Shelter and Shade

If your pooch is mostly an outside dog, or at least during the day, then factor shelter and shade into your landscaping design. Make sure there is a kennel or area for them to seek protection, and think about trees that can provide shade.

Both sun and rain can be uncomfortable for a dog that has no way to escape it. The beauty of a fresh landscape design is that there are many different options. You can even create a dog paradise with a dog house for them that matches your own.

A Play Zone

A beautifully landscaped yard can have meandering pathways, raised vegetable gardens, and ample flower gardens, but does it have somewhere for your dog to play? Make sure you have left a wide, open area for your dog(s) to run freely. Even if you have size restrictions, room for a pooch to stretch their legs is a must.

A yard can be both attractive and functional for a dog, but it can take some planning and homework. You can either work on a sketch yourself or enlist the help of a landscaping expert to lend a hand. Whatever you choose to do, your dog is sure to love you for it.
